When to Feed the Birds, Oh the Controversy
Is it OK to feed the birds in the summer? How about the spring? Should we be feeding them at all?

hi kristi! i am loving when i get to spend a wee bit of time watching your videos on a slower and rare morning with a cup of tea! i have noticed that the local birds fly into the chicken coop through the little ground door in winter to eat from the chicken feeders and drink water. sometimes they even roost there for the night on particularly cold nights like we’ve been having lately (-27 with wind chill!). we used to feed with a feeder, just to be able to see the birds outside our window, but then i read it was not so good to get them dependant on you as a food source. i figured though that they find the chicken and goat feed delicious…whole corn, wheat, black sunflowerseeds and field peas. No one likes ground feed in any form including the chickens.
thanks for all the great info. wish i had more time to spend on homework, but just watching your videos raises my awareness and makes the whole prospect of getting to know my neighborhood mor exciting and doable! awesome work! blessings!
Angela,
I’m happy you had a little time to be with the birds this morning. You know, that is a controversial topic… when to feed the birds. I did a video about that not too long ago. I’ll leave a link at the bottom of this message so you can watch it if you like. You know, if nothing else happens other than your awareness is piqued to new ways of hearing (which in time you may find will cause you to appear more easily distracted) then I’ve done my job.
Thank you for sharing your story and your experience.
~Kristi

This is just wonderful. The information is fascinating and I’m not even a bird person…yet. So fun to listen to and to see you.
I love the “YET”!!!!
Thanks Lisa!
Super happy you are finding them fun.
Hi Kristi. I enjoy your whole thing. Looking good. I like to learn stuff. I have an almost blind chicken and it’s kind of wet around Novelty Hill right now. I’m putting this message in a bottle and tossing it out the door.
Gosh Denny… Thanks for sharing! So nice to know you are learning something!! I’ve noticed, there is quite a bit of water out your way now!! Good luck!! Maybe you’ll get some surprise water fowl with all the the water now. All the best,
Kristi
Hi Kristi!
I look forward to your mentoring every week. I love them! I feed the birds when the weather gets extreme. It’s sort of my way to compensate for what may be effects of human caused global warming on the local weather.
Question: I read somewhere that hummingbirds cannot smell. It made me wonder – do birds smell things? What do birds use the sense of smell for?
Thank you, friend.
Kevin (Lay)
Kevin, I like that approach to feeding. I do think that in certain circumstances (i.e., effects of global warming) it’s important to supplement!!
And.. regarding your question about smell. That’s an awesome question. There is a great story about the Turkey Vulture and John James Audubon. You can find it along with a new theory on a bird’s sense of smell here…. https://www.audubon.org/magazine/january-february-2014/birds-can-smell-and-one-scientist
Thanks for asking and commenting. Keep ’em comin’!!!
